I literally just walked in the door.\u00a0 Fresh from a teaching moment.<\/p>\n
School starts at 7:55.\u00a0 I got a call from the telephone\u00a0in my daughter’s classroom at 8:00.\u00a0 Her panicked, baby bird voice coming down the line told me\u00a0she had forgotten\u00a0her accordion folder on the kitchen table.<\/p>\n
To understand the importance here, you have to understand that the accordion folder contains her ENTIRE 5th grade life.\u00a0 Papers to be turned in.\u00a0 Papers to be completed.\u00a0 Assignments-in-process.\u00a0 For all subjects.\u00a0 For the whole year.<\/p>\n
And to understand the importance here again, you have to understand that we’ve been struggling all week with making sure the accordion folder gets INTO the backpack\u00a0after homework is done\u00a0each night so it’s there when she gets to school the next morning!<\/p>\n
So….now….her\/my\/our fears have come true.\u00a0\u00a0She’s at school and the folder is at home.\u00a0 And the pressure is\u00a0on like Donkey Kong.<\/p>\n
The former Working Woman me would have said,\u00a0“Sorry, Sweetie.\u00a0 I’m at work and can’t run all the way home.\u00a0 Get the folder.\u00a0 Drop it off at school.\u00a0 And get back to work.\u00a0\u00a0So you’ll just have to face the consequences.”\u00a0\u00a0The\u00a0new Stay at Home Mom me was sitting there with\u00a0one hand on the folder and a coffee cup in the other.\u00a0 An appointment at 1 does not qualify as a busy morning.\u00a0\u00a0And I could get to school AND back\u00a0home in the space of 30 minutes.\u00a0 PLUS\u00a0I’ve been wanting to be a more kind-and-loving\u00a0mother instead of the smarmy, I-told-you-so mother I always seem to be with her lately.\u00a0 BUT\u00a0if I do bring the folder to school, will she finally LEARN to put it into her backpack every night after homework??<\/p>\n
What to do?\u00a0 What to do?!?<\/p>\n
My beautiful baby girl.\u00a0 She’s still so tiny.\u00a0 And sometimes it’s just so hard to be 10.\u00a0\u00a0And does she deserve any less compassion than I would show my husband?\u00a0 Or an acquaintance??\u00a0 Or even a colleague (not that I have any right now.\u00a0 But I did at one point.\u00a0 And I will again soon, I’m sure).<\/p>\n
The next\u00a05 minutes found me getting dressed,\u00a0plopping a ball cap on my head and racing out the door.\u00a0 [Side Note: Is this why ALL the\u00a0stay at home moms wear ball\u00a0caps?\u00a0 Have I finally unraveled that mystery??\u00a0 We’re all unexpectedly running forgotten homework to school???!?)<\/p>\n
Folder in the school office by 8:15.\u00a0 Daughter’s name announced over the intercom.\u00a0 Teacher notified via email.<\/p>\n
