There’s a total spelling scam going down at my daughter’s school.\u00a0 It’s called Spelling Sparkle.\u00a0 Here’s how it works:\u00a0 The kids line up and then are given one of that week’s spelling words.\u00a0 Each child-in-line gives ONE letter of the word and when the word is spelled, the next<\/em> student in lines shouts, “Spelling Sparkle!” and the student behind<\/em> them is out.\u00a0 WTF?<\/p>\n

Total scam.\u00a0 You don’t even have to be a terrible speller to get “out” in Spelling Sparkle.<\/p>\n

When I was in school you were “out” of Spelling Bee if you didn’t know how to spell a FULL word.\u00a0 You, yourself,\u00a0lived and died in Spelling Bee on your own<\/em> merit.\u00a0 Or in my case, on whether or not you could read your partner’s hand signals.<\/p>\n

You see – Kathy S. and I would make sure we stood next to each other in Spelling Bee line (up against the windows.\u00a0 Always against the windows.\u00a0 So the teacher could look over our heads and dream her dream of freedom\u00a0while the Spelling Bee Cluster Bomb was going down?!).\u00a0\u00a0With our uniform skirts pressed so closely together you couldn’t see that our hands were touching.\u00a0 We worked out this awesome hand-signal\u00a0system wherein we would “notify” each other\u00a0whether or not we were spelling words correctly.\u00a0 AS we were spelling the words.<\/p>\n

Kindof like a modified Hellen Keller\/Annie Sullivan schtick (W-A-T-E-R!).<\/p>\n

The flaw in the plan was that the signals became so complicated – and the odd pauses\u00a0while we were spelling words became so\u00a0pronounced – that we had to quit that cockamamie scheme.\u00a0 It was just easier\u00a0to know how to spell the words than to remember the signals.<\/p>\n

Anyway.\u00a0 I’m telling you all of this because a similar experience happened to me recently….<\/p>\n
