I got up early and\u00a0made apple cinnamon muffins and hot chocolate for the kids’ first day back to school yesterday.<\/p>\n
Then, while they were still sitting at the breakfast table, I pulled out the cookbook.\u00a0 (Rock on, my main girl, Betty Crocker!!)<\/p>\n
Them: “Whatcha doin’, Mom?”<\/p>\n
Me: “I’m gonna make chicken soup from the leftover chicken last night.”<\/p>\n
(side note: I made a roast chicken and all the trimmings\u00a0Sunday\u00a0night.\u00a0 I thought it would be a nice way to wrap up Christmas break.\u00a0 The family could sit down for one final, balanced meal before the lunacy of practices, homework, after-school appts etc. intruded into our Winter Idyll.\u00a0 And when I say I<\/em> cooked a chicken, I mean my husband did.\u00a0 I’ve never cooked a chicken or turkey in my life.\u00a0 It makes me gag to see a little diaperless [headless?] newborn all plucked and waiting-to-be-roasted in the pan.\u00a0 Gaaack!\u00a0 Gaaaaaaccccckkkkk!!!\u00a0 See what I mean?!?\u00a0 And let’s not even talk<\/em> about the carcass.\u00a0 I pitch it out before my husband’s even done carving it most times.\u00a0 Or, in the case of\u00a0Thanksgiving, I send it home with my mother-in-law.\u00a0 But a new day has dawned.\u00a0 I’m a stay at home mom with no job and I’m saving money by making my own soup!\u00a0 Makes me feel like a Depression Era Heroine in a chicken-for-every-pot sort of way.\u00a0 I just need to get me a cute apron to complete the role.)<\/p>\n Sissy: (my daughter – not actually named Sissy – but referred to as Sissy for blog purposes so as to preserve anonymity) “What do you need a recipe for?\u00a0 It’s easy.\u00a0 You just add noodles and soup!”<\/p>\n Why yes!\u00a0 Yes!\u00a0 That must be it!!\u00a0\u00a0Out of the mouth of babes as it were…<\/p>\n This whole time I thought you had to do something much more complicated, like boil the\u00a0baby-bones and skim scuzzy stuff\u00a0off the top afterwards.\u00a0 But now I’m on to you, Betty.\u00a0 I’m on to you!\u00a0 Ohhhhh, Betty Bettybettybetty.\u00a0 How you’ve failed me!\u00a0 Just add noodles and soup?\u00a0 So as to MAKE soup?!?\u00a0 Brilliant!!\u00a0 We’re besties, Betty…why have you been keeping this from me the whole time?!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" I got up early and\u00a0made apple cinnamon muffins and hot chocolate for the kids’ first day back to school yesterday.
