Today is Pi Day! March 14th. Three one four. 3.14 –\u00a0Pi! Get it!? Guck guck guck.<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Pi Day didn\u2019t exist back in my youth. It was only discovered about 3 or 4 years ago and schools across the land have been using it ever since as an excuse to eat pie during math class.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

And because I\u2019m that kind of amazingly organized mom, on the day BEFORE Pi Day, I made two pies – one for each kid\u2019s math class. (And by \u201cmade\u201d I mean \u201cbought at WalMart\u2019s bakery department\u201d but you have to give me snaps for the plan ahead approach!) Snap, snap, snap.<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Anyway, when I announced the good news to Sonny last night, his response was, \u201cBut Mom, I signed up to bring icecream.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Me: \u201cIcecream?! No! It\u2019s Pi Day, not icecream day!!\u201d I like a clever math joke, but I\u2019m not down with kids using it as a reason to eat favorite desserts during the first class of the day. \u201cNo. No icecream. You\u2019re bringing pie.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Him: \u201cOk. But do you even KNOW what Pi is?\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Me: \u201cOf course! It\u2019s 3.149367523…\u201d I completely made up everything after the 3.14 but it sounded impressive. It\u2019s always important to sound impressive when discussing math.<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Him: \u201cNo, I mean do you know WHAT it\u2019s used for?\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Me: \u201cSure.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Him: \u201cOk…what then?\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Me: \u201cYou act like you don\u2019t know so I\u2019m not sure I should tell you. If you haven\u2019t covered it in class yet, I may confuse you. Maybe I shouldn\u2019t tell you after all.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Him: \u201cMooom!\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Me: \u201cOk, you asked for it so don\u2019t blame me if you don\u2019t understand it.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Still me: See note above about sounding impressive when discussing math.<\/em> \u201cIt\u2019s the quadrangular way of calculating the unilateral arm of an isosceles triangle.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Him: \u201cWhat?! No way. You think icecream on Pi Day doesn\u2019t make sense. But that?! That made NO sense.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Me: \u201cAlright Pi Man, let\u2019s hear it. What IS\u00a0Pi?\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

At that point he gave me an explanation about circle circumference and radius calculations blah, blah, blah.\u00a0 I\u00a0won\u2019t repeat it\u00a0here because I don’t think it was right.\u00a0 Also?\u00a0 It made\u00a0Pi sound completely irrational. Ha, ha. See what I did there?!<\/em> Irrational!??!<\/span><\/span> Talk about a clever\u00a0math joke!\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/em>Snap, snap, snap.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
