Yesterday, I was reading a book, watching t.v. and running on the treadmill.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>I find this a very effective approach to running\u2026which makes it less like running and more like reading a book while watching t.v.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Anyway, Garth Brooks was on the Today Show for some big reveal of his new song.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>The song is about God talking to a baby and telling the baby that there\u2019s someone waiting for him \u2013 a loving angel, tender, tough and strong.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Then God tells the baby that, \u201cIt’s almost time to go and meet your mom.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Waaaaah!<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>WAAAAAHHHHH!!!!<\/span><\/em>\u00a0 <–<\/span><\/span>That\u2019s me HEARING the song about a baby going to meet his mom, and not the actual baby IN the song, in case you didn\u2019t know.<\/span><\/p>\n

And then?<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Then it\u2019s the LEAST like running on a treadmill that anyone has ever seen; And the MOST like standing still on a treadmill while sucking in huge gobs of air.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>I state for the record, Your Honor, that it\u2019s really hard to cry and run simultaneously.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>As is the case when you\u2019re laughing too hard, your knees get all wobbly.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>But it\u2019s the BREATHING that\u2019s the problem.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>You can\u2019t BREATHE if you\u2019re trying to run AND cry.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>So it\u2019s best just to stop altogether \u2018til the cryin\u2019 is done.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

It wasn\u2019t even so much the song that started me crying (ok, it might have been, which just pissed me off because what dope cries over a Garth Brooks song?!?), but it was also the memory it brought to me of my own little son, when he was a newly minted three year old.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>As I was putting him to bed on his third birthday, he asked me where he was before he was three.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>I explained he was two.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Before that, one.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>So we kept going back in time, but he wasn\u2019t looking for the eventual, \u201cFrom Mommy\u2019s tummy, Sweetie.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>He wanted to know where he was BEFORE all of that went down.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Before he existed.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Esoteric for anyone, much less a three year old, no?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

So I explained that some people say that babies are just a twinkle in their father\u2019s eye.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Weird.<\/span><\/em>\u00a0 <\/span>And sometimes people say that babies are angels in Heaven before God sends them down to earth.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Pause, two, three, four\u2026<\/span><\/em> \u201cDid you rip off my wings, Mommy?!\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Yes, Baby Boy.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Yes, I ripped off your wings.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>There\u2019s only room for one angel in these here parts.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Because have you heard? <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Garth Brooks says I\u2019m an angel.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

With that sweet memory re-lived and my breath caught, I start back up running on the treadmill.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>We angels have to keep up appearances, ya know.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
