This morning as I was heading across the upstairs walkway to the kids\u2019 rooms to wake them up, I heard\u00a0weird rustling noises\u00a0in the kitchen.<\/span><\/p>\n

Hmmmm. \u00a0<\/span><\/span>Must be a hungry kid who\u2019s up early and eating directly out of the cereal box or something while standing in the pantry.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/em>So I lean over the railing and call<\/span>, \u201cYou\u2019re up early, Sweetie!<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>I\u2019ll be right down.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

A pause in the rustling ensued.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>But no direct acknowledgement from the rustler followed.<\/span>\u00a0 Rude.<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

As I look up from this one-sided exchange, I can see through Sonny\u2019s open door that he\u2019s still in his bed.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>That\u2019s puzzling.\u00a0\u00a0I would have voted him Most Likely to Rustle up Some Breakfast Before Everyone Else is Up.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>So I guess it must be Sissy down there.<\/span><\/em>\u00a0 <\/span>After I wake Sonny\u00a0up, even though Sissy is apparently up and eating breakfast already, I stop in her room anyway to turn off her fan which she must’ve\u00a0forgotten to turn off before\u00a0she left for her early morning grub foray.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

And there\u2019s Sissy\u2026still asleep in her bed!<\/span><\/p>\n

Uhhh.\u00a0 Wow.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Either a neighbor completely lost their marbles and broke in for a snack, or the <\/span><\/span>escaped juvenile males<\/span><\/a> from last week ARE actually in my house AND\u00a0they stayed for breakfast.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

So I rush back into my bedroom and wake up my boyfriend, hand him a hairbrush I happen to be carrying and tell him there\u2019s a noise downstairs he has to investigate since Hubby\u2019s out of town.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ha, ha, HA!\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>That was silly.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>And YOU\u2019RE so silly for believing that thing about the boyfriend.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>It was totally my husband all along.\u00a0 You’re naughty for thinking otherwise.<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Hubby comes out onto the walkway with me.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>By that time Sissy is up too and we\u2019re all gathered there when, <\/span>rustle rustle RUSTLE!<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Hubby turns to me and says, \u201cWhat WAS that?\u201d\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I DON\u2019T KNOW!\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>THAT\u2019S WHY I CALLED\u00a0YOU IN!\u00a0 YOU’RE THE CAVALRY IN THIS STUPID PLAY!!!!<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

So\u00a0Hubby hops on his horse and disappears downstairs.\u00a0 Then\u00a0I hear him say, \u201cOh, Lord, i<\/span><\/span>t\u2019s a mouse!!!\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Apparently when he got downstairs, he found a chip bag on the floor of the pantry WITH a mouse\u00a0rustling around inside.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span>No wonder why we\u2019ve all been having stomach aches these last few days!\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>We\u2019ve probably been eating hantavirus\u00a0with our BBQ ‘tater chips.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Gaaack!<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>GAAAAAACK!!!!<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

So Sissy and I, along\u00a0with\u00a0the dog – who thinks the whole thing is just a\u00a0big, impromptu party – rush downstairs.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>As I come\u00a0around the corner, Hubby,\u00a0who’s standing guard at the pantry door, looks at me and says, \u201cDo we have a\u2026bowl\u2026or something?!?\u201d<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

A bowl?\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Really??!<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>This has \u2018Three Stooges\u2019 written all over it!<\/span><\/em>\u00a0 <\/span>So I say exactly that as I hand him a used yogurt container.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Instead of picking UP the chip bag WITH the mouse still\u00a0inside of it in order to dump it out the back door,\u00a0the brilliant “bowl” concept is now in play.\u00a0 This entails Hubby dumping out the chip bag onto the floor of the pantry and then SLAMMING his tiny “bowl”\u00a0down on TOP of the chips.\u00a0 Because the chips are\u00a0super\u00a0slow,\u00a0he wins there.\u00a0 The mouse, however?\u00a0 Is really fast and it runs OUT of the pantry while Hubby’s futzing\u00a0with the chips.\u00a0 It proceeds\u00a0around the kitchen island at a high clip and disappears into a lower cupboard.<\/span><\/p>\n

*^%&$#*%!!\u00a0 *^%$#%^&*$#!!!!!\u00a0 <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Ya know what\u2019s wacky\u00a0about all of that?\u00a0 N<\/span><\/span>o matter how far the Right to Vote and Equal Pay for Equal Work has taken us, some women STILL go all olde-tyme when faced with a mouse underfoot.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>They scream <\/span>EEEEEEEEEEK!<\/span><\/em> and jump up on a chair.\u00a0 There also may have been some swearing.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Like I said: wacky.\u00a0 And quite frankly, disappointing.\"\"<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Eventually, Sonny shows up acting suspiciously like the dog – <\/span><\/span>completely oblivious to what\u2019s really going on, but in high spirits nonetheless.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Turns out he thought there was a snow day we were excitedly whispering then shrieking about.<\/span>\u00a0 What the WHAT??<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Anyway, all\u2019s well that ends well.\u00a0 No snow day, though.\u00a0 And t<\/span><\/span>he mouse is still somewhere in the house.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>But Hubby has set a few\u00a0\u201ctraps\u201d so it\u2019s just a matter of time before\u00a0we start eating BBQ mouse feces again.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
