I was cleaning out last year\u2019s school supplies in preparation for the new school year, when I found Sonny\u2019s old Language Arts notebook.<\/span><\/p>\n

It contained exactly one page of spelling words and\u2026this drawing.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/span>I\u2019ve mentioned before that my son is <\/span>obsessed with zombies<\/span><\/a>, right?<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>He kinda – loves them – while hating them.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>As a result, he\u2019s become somewhat of a world expert on zombies.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>And this picture typifies EVERYTHING there is to know and to love\/hate about zombies.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

First off, the zombies only come out at night.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>It\u2019s not clear where they stay during the daytime (Under the bed?<\/span>\u00a0 In a<\/span> poorly lit closet??<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>California?!?).<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

But come nighttime?\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>They can ALWAYS be found.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>In your bedroom.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Standing quietly.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Right beside your bed.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Where YOU are, enjoying a good night\u2019s sleep on your weird, round bolster pillow.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Haahhhhnk zhoooo.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>Haahhhhnnnk zhooooo. Zhoooooo.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzhhooooooooo.<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

You are off in La-La Land, completely unaware that a zombie has been drawn by the smell of your rancid snoring and your\u2026<\/span>no, not brains.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>All the experts know that zombies don\u2019t eat brains anymore since the whole Mad Cow Disease thing a while back.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Instead, the zombie is drawn by the smell of your<\/span><\/em>\u2026HEART!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

WHAM!!!<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

What?!?\u00a0 Wheeeeee!!!\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><\/span>GAH?<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Guhhhhhhhh!\u00a0 Gulllulululululululgggggg.<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

And just like that, the undead has its arm elbow-deep in your thoracic cavity, rummaging around in there for your burning heart.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>It\u2019s curtains for you; Curtains I tell ya!<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

See??\u00a0 What\u2019s not to LOVE (ok, hate.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Mostly hate.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Well\u2026all hate, all the time actually) about that?!?\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>But?\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>I fear my story has become tiresome.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>In which case, n<\/span>ow is ze time vhen ve dance!<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

So many 80\u2019s songs, which one should we dance TO??\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

We\u2019ll settle on the blatantly obvious one: Survivor\u2019s \u201cBurning Heart\u201d (which appeared in the 1985 movie Rocky IV and on its soundtrack album).\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In the burning heart just about to burst
\n<\/span> There’s a quest for answers an unquenchable thirst
\nIn the darkest night rising like a spire
\nIn the burning heart the unmistakable fire<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

This round of the \u201c80\u2019s song for every moment in life\u201d goes to\u2026ME!\u00a0 I know, I know: <\/span><\/span>Eat your heart out.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Heh, heh, heh.\u00a0 Or better yet, have a zombie do it.\u00a0 In the middle of the night.\u00a0 While\u00a0you’re off in La-La Land.\u00a0 Nummy, num, num.\u00a0\u00a0ME LOVVVVE HEARTS!\u00a0 <–That was the zombie talking, not me.\u00a0 But that part where I said ‘not me,’ that WAS\u00a0me talking.\u00a0 But this isn’t really about ME, it’s about you.\u00a0 And how you never, ever win any rounds in our “80’s song” game.\u00a0 Just sayin’.\u00a0 And yes, that WAS me sayin’.\u00a0 But I’m really done sayin’ stuff now.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
