Because Sissy is A-Number-One Citizen, she has already read her two Summer Reading Assignment books and is wrapping up her essay on same.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Need I mention that it\u2019s still actually summer vacation?<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>And the assignment isn\u2019t due until the Friday AFTER school starts?!<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Yes, I need mention that, because then you<\/span>\u2019ll agree \u2013 God bless A-Number-One-Citizens!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

But because the assignment was written in a confusing way (Two sets of paragraphs, one for EACH book?<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Or one set of paragraphs, to cover BOTH books??<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>See?!<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Confusing.) Sissy called me into the computer room where she was typing her assignment for a clarification discussion.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Once that discussion was over, we moved into a conversation about the setting of one of the books.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>She had been going down some path where she was trying to place it in time (mid-1960\u2019s) and actual mid-Western state (implied but unnamed).<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>But she revised it slightly once I started asking my usual insightful questions, \u201cWas the name where the book\u00a0took place mentioned?<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>If not, WHERE did it take place \u2013 in the country, or a city?<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>A big, wealthy city or not??<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Were there any clues about the time of year when it happened?<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Summer?<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Winter??\u201d <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Then, because I\u2019m a fun and pretty mother \u2013 and just a teeeensy bit mean (ok, a LOT mean) \u2013 as I\u2019m walking away I say, \u201cAnd don\u2019t forget about the robots.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>I think you should definitely mention something about the robots.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u2026processing\u2026processing\u2026processing<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cWHAT??!!?!<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>I DON\u2019T REMEMBER ANYTHING ABOUT ROBOTS!!!!<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>HOW CAN I MENTION ABOUT ROBOTS WHEN I DIDN\u2019T EVEN <\/span>KNOW<\/span><\/em> THERE <\/span>WERE<\/span><\/em><\/strong> ROBOTS?!??!!\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I suppose it would be helpful if you knew which books I was talking about, right?<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>One was <\/span>uglies<\/span><\/em> by Scott Westerfeld.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Published in 2011.\u00a0 Never heard of it.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Never read it.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>However, it looks intriguing: \u201cA world where everyone\u2019s ugly.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>And then they\u2019re not.\u201d\u00a0 Hmmmm…<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

But the other book?<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>The one\u00a0with the robots??\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>The Outsiders<\/span><\/em> by S.E. Hinton.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Now THAT\u2019S what I\u2019m talkin\u2019bout.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Read it.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Lived it.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>LOVED it!<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>It was the book of my generation.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Well\u2026more like the movie of my generation, b<\/span>ut still.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Directed by Francis Ford Coppola and released in 1983.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>It starred all those hot boys from back in the day \u2013 C. Thomas Howell, Rob Lowe, Emilio Estevez, Matt Dillon, Tom Cruise, Patrick Swayze, Ralph Macchio.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Oh my GOSH!<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>And?<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>It introduced robots into the mainstream.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>It doesn\u2019t GET any more 80\u2019s than that, who\u2019s yer daddy?!\u00a0\u00a0E<\/span>xcept when I mention that the movie popularized that song \u201cGloria\u201d by Them.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>G-L-O-R-I-Aaaaa.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Glooo-ria!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
