We\u2019ve established that bizarre stuff happens to me all of the time.<\/span>\u00a0 What you may not know is that t<\/span>his unique talent is not indigenous to Colorado, and in fact follows me wherever I go.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

We were in New York City a few weeks ago when it struck.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Correction: we weren\u2019t actually in the city \u2013 we were waiting in line to board the ferry which would take us from the Statue of Liberty to Ellis Island \u2013 when it struck.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>And STUCK.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I was looking at my watch to see if we were \u201con track\u201d with our sight-seeing.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>You do that too, right?<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Sight-seeing is stressful and you have to fit it all in in the allotted time.<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0S<\/span>o you gotta make sure you\u2019re at certain places at certain times.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Otherwise you\u2019ll fall behind in your sight-seeing and you won\u2019t see all the sights.\u00a0\u00a0There may even be yelling.\u00a0 Hey!\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Yew lookin\u2019 at me?<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>YEW LOOKIN\u2019 AT ME?!<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Don\u2019t look at me that way.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>You know you do it too.<\/span><\/em>\u00a0 <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Hubby, the kids and I are standing in a sea of humanity, it\u2019s about a million smoggy, muggy degrees and some folks in said sea\u00a0haven\u2019t discovered the modern miracle of deodorant yet.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>In addition, we\u2019re all lined up in the most disorderly, someone\u2019s-gonna-get-shived-any-second-now sort of line.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>I\u2019ve got my arm crooked, watch at waist-level.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>When from out of nowhere a piece of chewed gum lands on my watch.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>It happened so quickly that at first I thought the gum\u2026somehow\u2026<\/span>SPRANG<\/span><\/em> out of my watch.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Oh look, Kids!<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>It\u2019s GUM TIME!!!<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>CONGA!!!<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Dun-dun-dun-dun-duhn-DUH!<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Hubby has been expecting Gum Time for our entire married life so wasn\u2019t surprised when it happened and didn\u2019t flinch or look away.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>He witnessed the whole thing.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>He looks at the gum, looks at me (like it\u2019s MY fault?<\/span>\u00a0 ‘Cause it’s NOT!\u00a0 I was just STANDING here WONDERING WHAT TIME IT WAS!\u00a0 It’s not l<\/span>ike I was shouting, \u201cHey!<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Anyone got gum?!<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>My watch sure could use some GUM.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>So if anyone\u2019s got gray, chewed gum, toss it on over here!!<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Because according to my watch, it\u2019s GUM TIME!\u201d<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>CONGA!!!<\/span><\/em>) <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

He looks one more time at my watch, shakes his head, then moves away.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Just quietly slips through the crowd away from me.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Sonny is still staring at me open-mouthed-with-gagging-noises-coming-out while Sissy has had the presence of mind to begin looking around for the perpetrator.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>(She suspected the culprits were a one-year-old and a three-year-old acting silly in a double stroller.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>But I\u2019m not so sure\u2026)<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>so they missed Hubby moving away from us;\u00a0<\/span>I had to tell the kids to hurry and follow Dad!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

When we caught up to him (I didn\u2019t care where he went, I just needed the banana peel he was holding to pull the ABC gum off my watch, don’t ask) I wondered aloud\u00a0why he walked away like that.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>His reply?<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cIn case there was more gum comin\u2019, I didn\u2019t want any part of it.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
