I view hardware stores the same way some people view Pinterest:<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>All the great ideas for cute projects you\u2019ve ever had or seen, all waiting in one place.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Just waiting until you have enough time and money to do them all.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>In other words, when you\u2019re dead.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>And that\u2019s why there\u2019s a LOT of rich-but-decomposing people in the hardware store.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Hyuck-hyuck-hyuck!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Back when there were no other hardware stores in the world, I called my favorite one Home Despot.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>They knew they were the only game in town and could lord it over you.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>And be completely unhelpful and nondescriptive.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>For example, they would post signs like: Topsoil \u2013 5 for $10.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

5 WHAT, ya jerks?<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>5 DOLLARS of topsoil for 10 dollars?!?<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>5 GIRTH UNITS of topsoil?!?<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Annoying.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

But since Lowes came to town and shot Home Depot down, Dr. Pepper fixed him up and now they\u2019re after 7-Up.<\/span>\u00a0 The\u00a0<\/span>result?<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Home Depot\u2019s topsoil signage has gotten better.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Competition always brings out a humbler, gentler, more descriptive Home Depot.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

But I digress.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Where I was really headed with all the Home Depot talk is\u00a0that I still go there sometimes.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Old habits die hard.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Recently I was looking for unfinished wooden boxes.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Don\u2019t ask!<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>See great ideas\/cute projects\u00a0above.<\/span><\/em>\u00a0 <\/span>A man in blue work coveralls was coming in from the outdoor garden section – which is where I was headed – and he asked if he could help me.<\/span>\u00a0 The welcome guy at\u00a0the store entrance\u00a0<\/span>I had been speaking to earlier was following behind me, so I thanked Coveralls but said I was already being helped.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Welcome Guy and I never did find the boxes, but I did find $25 worth of OTHER great ideas and when I was checking out, I saw Coveralls again.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Also checking out.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>In the self-check aisle.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>He was shoving spraypaint in a bag and glancing at me over his shoulder.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>And wearing blue work coveralls.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Did you know that\u00a0<\/span>ACTUAL\u00a0workers at Home Depot wear\u00a0crisp orange aprons?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

That\u2019s it.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>That\u2019s all I wanted to say.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

And to answer the question, it\u2019s 5 BAGS of topsoil for $10.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>That\u2019s a pretty good price.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>You should get some.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
