\"\"<\/a>Do you know what “WPM” means?\u00a0 If you graduated from college in the early 1990’s and had to get a temp-to-perm job through Manpower, then you are thoroughly versed in WPM.<\/p>\n

Words per minute.\u00a0 As in: how many of them can you type.<\/p>\n

Remember those old typing tests?!\u00a0 Manpower was famous for them.<\/p>\n

They’d have you use\u00a0some inane “sample paragraph” with little numbers under all the words.\u00a0 [I was a personal fan of “When my teacher scolded me,” but\u00a0I always felt “A visit to an exhibition” coulda used a little work.]<\/p>\n

Your Career Counselor would yell “Go!” and start the stopwatch.\u00a0 You’d furiously thunk\u00a0away\u00a0on actual paper with no spell check or opportunity to\u00a0correct your work.<\/p>\n

And the kick in the pants (or should I say the kick in the suntan-colored hose and Kasper suit?) would be that your nerves caused your fingers to go one key “off.”\u00a0\u00a0Turns out you could\u00a0type 60 words of gobbledygook per minute back when that meant something.<\/p>\n

Flash forward to a new century, and check out this “Skills and Qualifications” gem I recently came across on a job application \u00a0[above].<\/p>\n

Where did these questions come from?!\u00a0 We’re not asking any of these questions anymore – including the WPM one.<\/p>\n

In which case, I think my answer speaks for itself.<\/p>\n
