Shortly after I published yesterday\u2019s blog about April Fools Day, I got a call from the school nurse.\u00a0 She started the conversation with, \u201cSonny isn\u2019t showing any signs of concussion, but I\u2019ll monitor him closely today and let you know if something comes up.\u201d\u00a0 Uh, ok.\u00a0 But that’s\u00a0odd because\u00a0I didn\u2019t send him to school with a concussion.\u00a0 I wonder how he got it.<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

But she wasn’t finished, \u201cOh!\u00a0 Also?\u00a0 He just came from the principal\u2019s office and he\u2019ll be bringing home a REFOCUS FORM for you to sign.\u201d\u00a0 Aha!\u00a0 Lightbulb.\u00a0 Sonny was living up to the day\u2019s name and decided to do something completely foolish which landed him in the principal\u2019s office AND the nurse\u2019s office.\u00a0 This is gonna be fun.<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Eventually I was able to piece together this story: Sonny\u2019s bestie (to protect his privacy, we’ll refer to him as\u00a0Slapnuts) suggested during snack time that Sonny climb on his desk and jump off.\u00a0 In order to understand the dynamic don\u2019t of Sonny and Slapnuts, you have to understand that they continuously live in opposite land where every \u201cgood\u201d idea they come up with\u00a0is actually a really, really bad idea.\u00a0 Case in point?\u00a0 This classroom parkour scenario.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The teacher had her back turned, instructing the new girl on some rules and heard a HUGE thump and then some screaming. \u00a0And laughter.\u00a0 And screaming laughter.\u00a0 And crying.\u00a0 Welcome new girl!<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

When she turned back, Sonny was lying in a tangle of desks.\u00a0 Apparently when he went to leap like a gazelle off the top of the desk, the desk actually squirted out from underneath him.\u00a0 So instead of \u201cgraceful jump\u201d it became more\u00a0of a fiery Hindenburg plummet-to-the-ground scenario.\u00a0 Oh, the humanity!<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

As a nice final touch to the disaster, Sonny\u2019s melon-head slammed \u2013 in a crashing, concussive sort of fashion \u2013 and really not fun or funny at all because remember it\u2019s opposite land where good ideas are really, really BAD\u00a0\u2013 into the leg-bars of one of the toppled desks.<\/span><\/p>\n

Yep.\u00a0 That sounds about right.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

I got those additional details of the incident from Sonny’s teacher.\u00a0 When she emailed me\u00a0requesting a meeting.\u00a0 Eeeks!\u00a0 Why do I suddenly feel like <\/em>I’ve been jumping off desks?!?<\/em>\u00a0 And laying out the\u00a0consequences that Sonny will now be facing in the classroom.\u00a0 Thumbscrews for starters and then shackling in the stockade during snack time for the rest of the week.\u00a0 I\u2019m to provide rotten cabbages for throwing.\u00a0 And no reward recess for Sonny on Friday. Doesn\u2019t seem like enough if you ask me.\u00a0 COME ON!\u00a0 No I’m not being too hard.\u00a0 He\u00a0completely disrupted the classroom,\u00a0had to go see the principal\u00a0AND the nurse, and probably gave himself more dain brammage than he already has as a result of all the hi-jinks\u00a0he and Slapnuts endlessly come up with.\u00a0 My vote would have been\u00a0for a dull, rusty guillotine!\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/em>\u00a0<\/em> <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

My email back to the teacher started with, \u201cSounds like it was a bad plan all the way around…and he got what he deserved including the blow to the head and trip to the principal<\/strong>.\u201d\u00a0 And ended with, \u201cAgain we apologize for the disruption today & we are taking steps to correct the behavior at home.<\/strong> [Off with his head!<\/em>]\u00a0 We appreciate all you are doing at school to make our monkey into a human boy<\/strong>.\u201d\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Yep.\u00a0 Fools’ Day alright.\u00a0 Did you notice that was plural, possessive?\u00a0 Because I’m including Slapnuts in this one.\u00a0 April or otherwise.\u00a0 Ongoing, really.\u00a0 With no end in sight.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
