We were headed out the other day and\u00a0everything was going wrong in the back seat of the car.\u00a0\u00a0My son couldn’t open the door to get in.\u00a0 Once finally in, he couldn’t close the door.\u00a0 Stuff was falling all over the floor.\u00a0\u00a0He couldn’t put on his seatbelt.\u00a0\u00a0And on and on and on.<\/p>\n
Me:\u00a0 “What’s going on back there, Buddy?\u00a0 Why are you having such a hard time?”<\/p>\n
Him: “Oh, I’m just practicing.”<\/p>\n
Me: “Practicing?!\u00a0 Practicing for what?”<\/p>\n
Him: “Just in case I lose all my fingers and only have my pinkies left, I’m practicing for that.”<\/p>\n
Me:\u00a0 [out loud] “Well…just get buckled already.”\u00a0 [in my head] “Best.\u00a0 Idea.\u00a0 EVER!”<\/p>\n
I mean, come on!\u00a0 Isn’t he\u00a0right?!<\/p>\n
We should all be “practicing” for obscure, most-likely-won’t-happen life events\u00a0because who knows what the future holds.\u00a0\u00a0 If we are\u00a0left to function with only pinkies (please, God, no), are we ready?\u00a0\u00a0Or – as is the case\u00a0with me – if we are thrust into a role that we never in a million years thought would be ours,\u00a0have we “practiced” enough??<\/p>\n
