Sonny asked me the other day which child was my favorite\u2026him or Sissy.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Now –\u00a0if you\u2019re a mother –\u00a0you\u2019ll recall that when you took your motherhood oath, you swore that you would never HAVE a favorite child.\u00a0 And if by chance you forgot that oath, and actually DID have a favorite child?\u00a0 Then there was that secondary oath about never admitting which child IS your favorite.\u00a0 To anyone.\u00a0 Including yourself.<\/span><\/p>\n

Of course you remember that oath.\u00a0 It was after you did that secret handshake?\u00a0 In the\u00a0backroom??\u00a0 You got a pin.\u00a0 There was a color guard?\u00a0 Still not ringing a bell?!?\u00a0<\/em> You can\u2019t tell me that none of this is sounding familiar.\u00a0 And why are you looking at me like that?<\/span><\/p>\n

Wait.\u00a0 Was I not supposed to say anything about the oath??\u00a0 Was this our own little big<\/em> secret?!?\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Oopsie.\u00a0 Sorry, Gals.\u00a0 Tee hee hee.\u00a0 [Insert nervous laughter here, and also\u2026blink, blink\u2026blink, blink\u2026<\/em>look at my\u00a0cute, innocent face.\u00a0 Is it defraying your anger yet?\u00a0\u00a0\u2018Cause this approach always works when your kids do it, right?]\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

But really, who hasn\u2019t tried to squeeze that info out of their own mother?\u00a0 In fact, I remember how we (and when I say \u201cwe\u201d I mean mostly me.\u00a0 I pretty much KNEW I was NOT the favorite child.\u00a0 I know.\u00a0 Weird.) would put forth improbable scenarios to see how Mom would answer and then we (mostly me) would know; Finally KNOW who her favorite child was.\u00a0 (Again, not me, but info still worth having in my back pocket for future sessions with the therapist.)\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMom, what if the house was on fire and you could only save one of us\u2026which one would you save?\u201d\u00a0 But hah-HAH!<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0Mom, remembering the oath in the backroom with the secret handshake, the pin, and the color guard, would say, \u201cI would save you ALL or die trying!\u201d\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Hmmm\u2026really, Mom?!\u00a0 \u00a0I have my suspicions.\u00a0 Just \u2018fess UP already.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Still,\u00a0when Sonny asked me the question of who my favorite child was,\u00a0I was a bit taken aback.\u00a0 I don\u2019t recall my kids ever asking me THAT particular question.\u00a0 And as far as I could tell, it was completely unprovoked (THAT day at least).<\/span><\/p>\n

But being the mother of a former boy scout, I was prepared!\u00a0 My response?\u00a0 \u201cActually\u2026I don\u2019t like either one of you very much.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
