Has enough been said about this year\u2019s Super Bowl* commercials yet?\u00a0 Naw – I didn\u2019t think so either!\u00a0 We\u2019re so much alike!!\u00a0 Freaky.<\/span><\/p>\n

And now?\u00a0 Now it\u2019s my turn to weigh in on the commercials.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

But before I get started, I need to let you know that I\u2019m a marketer by trade\u2026Wait.\u00a0 Does \u2018marketer\u2019 make me sound like I go to the market a lot?\u00a0 \u2018Cause I don\u2019t want it to.\u00a0 I mean I DO go to the market a lot, but I don\u2019t want you to think that\u2019s what I do for a living.\u00a0 Because right now, I don\u2019t do ANYTHING for a living \u2013 thanks for bringing it up <\/em>stink eye, stink eye.\u00a0 But if I DID do something for a living, it wouldn\u2019t be going to the market.\u00a0 Rather, it would be MARKETING!\u00a0 Phew!\u00a0 Glad we figured that out.\u00a0 Wait.\u00a0 Unless \u2018marketing\u2019 makes it sound like I go to the market to do quite a bit of marketing.\u00a0 \u2018Cause I do, but<\/em>\u2026and the Super Bowl commercials are a marketer\u2019s Nirvana.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In addition to being a marketer at heart\u2026if not by current trade \u2013 WILL YOU STOP BRINGING IT UP ALREADY!?\u00a0 Also, does \u2018marketing\u2019 make it sound like a horse might be involved?\u00a0 Like I gallop on my horse to the market??\u00a0 \u2018Cause I don\u2019t, and I just wanted to clarify.\u00a0 In case you were confused<\/em>\u2026me no likey football.\u00a0 Which means I pay extra SPECIAL attention to the Super Bowl commercials.\u00a0 And it\u2019s with a heavy heart that I tell you that the commercials this year were a little\u2026meh<\/em>.\u00a0 Particularly those during the first half.<\/span><\/p>\n

Professional Opinion, peeps.\u00a0 Nothin\u2019 personal.<\/span><\/p>\n

And admittedly, I didn\u2019t see ALL the commercials this year because at some point we switched to Puppy Bowl TEN.* (Where there\u00a0were some pretty decent commercials in their own right.\u00a0\u00a0Case in point?\u00a0 The one for the three-pronged, foldable cane called the HurryCane.\u00a0 Get it?\u00a0 HURRYcane?\u00a0 See – good, right??)<\/span><\/p>\n

Anywhoooo, what was UP with ALL the car commercials?\u00a0 The Volkswagen one was fairly cute with the German engineers getting their wings and pooping rainbows.\u00a0 But the rest of them were very frequent and very annoying.\u00a0 Especially that one with the Muppets.\u00a0 I don\u2019t even remember what kind of car was being advertised.\u00a0 All I remember were the Muppets.\u00a0 Because WHO is actually still doing stuff with MUPPETS?!?\u00a0 Who would buy\u2026a car\u2026that was advertised by MUPPETS???\u00a0 In fact, I posed this very question to my family, and Sissy replied, \u201cUh, Muppet Lovers?\u201d\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Yes!\u00a0 But who EXACTLY are the Muppet Lovers?\u00a0 Who\u2019s left in this world that\u2019s a Muppet Lover?!\u00a0 Octogenarians?\u00a0 And are they buying a lot of cars??\u00a0\u00a0I\u2019d love to see the Market Research behind this.\u00a0 The hard numbers that prove octogenarian Muppet Lovers are this car\u2019s target audience.\u00a0 Better yet, show me the transcripts from the Focus Group at the Senior Center where people were shouting out Kermit!<\/em>\u00a0 and Miss Piggy!<\/em> when asked who they\u2019re most likely to buy a car from in the near future.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ok.\u00a0 I\u2019ll move on now, and stop being so negative because those Muppet-y Marketers HAVE jobs and I don\u2019t.\u00a0 But alls I\u2019m sayin\u2019 is that the Muppet thing seemed a little risky in terms of a marketing strategy.\u00a0 That\u2019s it.\u00a0 Done.\u00a0 Ok, zipping it.\u00a0 Zipped!<\/span><\/p>\n

And then there were those commercials that \u2013 to my complete and utter horror \u2013 actually made me tear up.\u00a0 What?!\u00a0 WHAT??<\/em>\u00a0 There\u2019s no crying in football!!\u00a0 But I gotta say, that \u201cEvery soldier deserves a hero\u2019s welcome\u201d commercial got me right here.\u00a0 In my icy, judgmental, marketing heart.\u00a0 As did the Honda one where\u00a0Bruce Willis tells\u00a0me, personally, to hug everyone in the room.\u00a0 (Which I did.\u00a0 Because I do what Bruce Willis tells me to do.\u00a0 Every time.)\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

And hows-about that T-Mobile commercial?\u00a0 The one with the whistling??\u00a0 That drove the dog batshit, so you now owe me BIG TIME, T-Mobile.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

And let\u2019s pause right here for a grammar lesson, shall we?\u00a0 My English Major Mother\u2026did it almost sound like I was trying to break into that \u201cI am the very model of a modern major-general\u201d song from <\/em>The Pirates of Penzance?\u00a0 \u2018Cause I wasn\u2019t.\u00a0 It just maybe sounded that way<\/em>\u2026always told me the rule is, “Less in quantity; Fewer in number.”\u00a0\u00a0(She say\u2019s nem-bah \u2018cause she\u2019s from New Hampshire, but you can just say \u2018number\u2019 regular-like if you want.)\u00a0 Which means Soda Stream and spokesgal\u00a0Scarlet Johansen were a teensy bit off with their slogan, \u201cLess sugar;\u00a0Less bottles.\u201d\u00a0 Because the Modern English Major Mother General might say instead, \u201cLess sugar;\u00a0FEWER bottles.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Speaking of bottles, can you IMAGINE how much drinking was going on during the Super Bowl??\u00a0 Which leaves me particularly puzzled as to why Scientology would pay a MINT to air a commercial for\u2026Scientology.\u00a0 Are drunkards with their faces painted blue really their target market, spiritually speaking??<\/span><\/p>\n

Finally, a word on that Microsoft commercial about technology:\u00a0<\/span>http:\/\/youtu.be\/qaOvHKG0Tio<\/span><\/a> (#empowering).\u00a0 Wow.\u00a0 Just\u2026wow.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Microsoft, will you hire me?\u00a0 I\u2019m a marketer\u2026and I\u2019d love do some marketing\u2026but I\u2019m not doing any of that right now.\u00a0 Thanks for bringing it up!\u00a0 Stink eye, stink eye<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n
