{"id":2186,"date":"2013-11-20T10:29:47","date_gmt":"2013-11-20T17:29:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/newstayathomemom.com\/?p=2186"},"modified":"2013-11-20T10:30:13","modified_gmt":"2013-11-20T17:30:13","slug":"book-club-or-bust","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newstayathomemom.com\/?p=2186","title":{"rendered":"Book Club or Bust!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>My book club is now defunct.<\/p>\n<p>It started slowly sliding off the hill when we began\u00a0selecting\u00a0vampire books-that-were-made-into-movies so we could all go see the movie together.<\/p>\n<p>Then we just started going to the vampire movies and skipping the books altogether.<\/p>\n<p>Then we started skipping the movies and meeting at winebars.<\/p>\n<p>Every once in a blue moon I\u2019ll get an email about a book suggestion and subsequent meet up at someone\u2019s house, but because I don\u2019t even live in that \u2018hood anymore, I\u2019ve kinda opted out.<\/p>\n<p>But that\u2019s not to say I haven\u2019t been reading; Because I have.\u00a0 I\u2019ve been reading all the books I didn\u2019t get a chance to read when they first came out because I had one of them-there JOBS everyone is always nattering on about.<\/p>\n<p>[Well, and all the books I didn\u2019t get a chance to read because I was slogging my way through five THOUSAND pages of Game of Thrones.\u00a0 Here\u2019s a friendly hint for you: There are actually FIVE books in that series, not four.\u00a0 So when you get to the end of the fourth and nothing has been wrapped up and in fact 10 MILLION more characters and contenders-for-the-throne have been introduced, don\u2019t be surprised.\u00a0 Don\u2019t be surprised when it\u2019s that way at the end of the FIFTH book either.\u00a0 Clearly there will be ten MORE books that eventually I\u2019ll be too old to read or remember anything about.]<\/p>\n<p>So, in no particular order are the books I\u2019ve read recently.\u00a0 Along with a few insightful comments about them:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>Gone Girl<\/em><\/strong> by Gillian Flynn.\u00a0 <em>Wack.\u00a0 Totally wack.\u00a0 And no I don\u2019t want to read any more of her books because I\u2019m sure it would be more of the same.\u00a0 Doesn\u2019t the husband ALWAYS do it?\u00a0 Uh\u2026nope.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong><em>The Night Circus<\/em><\/strong> by Erin Morgenstern.\u00a0 <em>It starts to make you think that magicians might actually BE magic and not just DOING magic.\u00a0 Either way, I sure hope Le Cirque des R\u00eaves is coming to Denver soon!\u00a0 In fact, I sent an email to the address listed on the proprietor\u2019s business card, but the reply indicated it\u2019s against their policy to disclose information about upcoming locations.\u00a0 See??\u00a0 Magic might actually EXIST! <\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong><em>The Language of Flowers<\/em><\/strong> by Vanessa Diffenbaugh.\u00a0 <em>So sad.\u00a0 But uplifting at the end.\u00a0 But sad most of the time.\u00a0 But some happy parts.\u00a0 Very few though because the main character is so flawed.\u00a0 But that part about the Victorian language of flowers was way interesting.\u00a0 Also?\u00a0 I may now want to adopt a dozen children from foster care. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong><em>The Beautiful Mystery<\/em><\/strong> by Louise Penny.\u00a0 <em>It\u2019s one of the Chief Inspector Gamache series.\u00a0 I love him as a main character.\u00a0 But I suppose everyone else does too.\u00a0 If you were looking for a sex scandal at the monastery, you\u2019ll be severely disappointed.\u00a0 But Gamache\u2019s second-in-command does fall off the deep-end, so there is that.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong><em>The Paris Wife<\/em><\/strong> by Paula McLain.\u00a0 <em>It should actually have been called &#8220;A Doormat in Paris.&#8221;\u00a0 And as a side note?\u00a0 Ernest Hemingway was a total a$$.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Finally, I\u2019ve just begun\u00a0reading <strong><em>Cutting for Stone<\/em><\/strong> by Abraham Verghese.\u00a0 I\u2019m starting to get that sinking feeling in my stomach.\u00a0 The one that means I will hate this book but continue to read it anyway, and then be sad for the rest of my life that I did.\u00a0 This is exactly the same way I felt about <strong><em>The Kite Runner <\/em><\/strong>and <strong><em>Little Bee<\/em><\/strong>.\u00a0 I feel like the whole thing is just gonna be a HUGE boo-hoo fest that will linger long after the borrowed library book has expired and disappeared into the air above my Nook.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>My book club is now defunct.
