My daughter came home from school yesterday\u00a0out-of-sorts and frazzled and\u00a0said, “I want to be a stay at home kid!”<\/p>\n

Yes, 5th grade sucks.\u00a0 But aside from that,\u00a0apparently I’ve been making this stay at home mom gig look like good times.\u00a0 But it’s hard work.<\/p>\n

Please don’t misunderstand me;\u00a0It’s not the kind of hard work that you might do in order to close down a failing, unionized manufacturing plant (been there, done that) nor is it the kind of work you might do to create a business case in order to convince your company to move into a multi-million dollar\u00a0market (been there, done THAT too).\u00a0 But I digress.\u00a0 Being a stay at home mom is hard work… in its own way.<\/p>\n

Take this morning for example.\u00a0 I baked cookies AND cleaned bathrooms.\u00a0 Simultaneously!\u00a0 And all without giving the family a bad case of E.coli poisoning (I hope)\u00a0while\u00a0a seasonal craft project waited\u00a0in the wings calling my name.<\/p>\n

BTW – it turns out there’s a methodology to the bathroom cleaning thing.\u00a0 You clean the toilets LAST!\u00a0 D’ohhhhh!!!\u00a0 You were waiting for me to figure that out on my own instead of telling me, weren’t you?\u00a0 I’m aware of this weird stay at home mom\u00a0initiation thing I’ve been going through.\u00a0\u00a0But I’m on to you and hazing is against the rules and I’ve already informed the pledge master so it better not happen again.<\/p>\n

When the bathroom cleaning efforts are TIMED, the whole thing goes much quicker.\u00a0 I’m from the switch-the-cookie-pan-on-the-top-oven-rack-to-the-bottom-every-five-minutes (-and-vice-versa)\u00a0school of thought.\u00a0 This allows the cookies to cook evenly and prevents burning on the bottom of the cookies that have been left on the lower\u00a0rack for the full 10 minutes of cooking time.\u00a0\u00a0More importantly,\u00a0it allows me five minutes only<\/em> to accomplish some key segment of the bathroom cleaning process before have to\u00a0pull off my gloves,\u00a0wash\u00a0my hands and switch the cookie pans.\u00a0 [don’t worry, I saved the toilet cleaning for AFTER the cookies were all done.]<\/p>\n

Also, the craft project is halfway done but the Halloween season is upon us and time is ticking.\u00a0\u00a0In case you think I jest about this morning’s activities – I’ve included pics of same for your viewing pleasure (below).<\/p>\n

And talk about hard!\u00a0 Wading\u00a0through the\u00a0thick cloud of silence that hangs heavy in the house once everyone leaves for the day really drains you.\u00a0 But\u00a0I’ve been playing more 80’s music lately to combat that.\u00a0 Turns out\u00a0you can’t really hear much of it though\u00a0over the sound of the vacuum cleaner.\u00a0 Or\u00a0the dishwasher.\u00a0 Or\u00a0the zippers on the sweatshirts clanking around in the dryer.<\/p>\n

See what I mean?\u00a0 Hard work.<\/p>\n
