Because I’m a total dork, I signed up to receive newsflashes from my\u00a0town hall.\u00a0 (Dork!<\/em>)\u00a0 One such newsflash came across today while the entire family was on the way home from parent\/teacher conferences.\u00a0 Serendipitously enough, it was about “Local Youth Invited to Join 4-H!”\u00a0 because really, what better time to be alerted about\u00a04-H enrollment than on the way home from parent\/teacher conferences with the entire family in the car!\u00a0 Am I right, or am I right??\u00a0 (I’m right.\u00a0 I’m always right.\u00a0 It always goes down much easier if you get on board with me always being right.\u00a0 And no,\u00a0I’m not joking.\u00a0 In fact, it’s no joking matter.\u00a0 Being right all the time is a terrible, terrible burden and it’s not something to joke about.\u00a0 It’s serious business.<\/em>)<\/p>\n

After some general conversation about\u00a0where we may have encountered 4-H (the County Fair we attend every year\u00a0to see the 4-H exhibit and all the blue ribbon winning entries\u00a0– Dork<\/em>!) we shifted into a discussion about what exactly 4-H is (home economics projects,\u00a0how to\u00a0raise\u00a0animals etc.).<\/p>\n

Sonny immediately chimed in with, “I’ll do anything with monkeys!”<\/p>\n

Me: “Uh….No.\u00a0 There’s not even anything\u00a0ABOUT monkeys!\u00a0 4-H is\u00a0more about\u00a0baking cakes and how to raise livestock and stuff like that.”<\/p>\n

Sissy (the girl who wants to be a veterinarian): “Oooh.\u00a0 I’ll do livestock!\u00a0 Can I sign up for livestock?”<\/p>\n

Me: “Actually, Sweetie…I think ‘livestock’\u00a0is more along the lines of raising a calf all the way through butchering it and selling its meat.”<\/p>\n

Sissy: “THAT’S LIVESTOCK?!?!\u00a0 Then no, I don’t want to do THAT!”<\/p>\n

Since this conversation is going nowhere fast, I decided to READ\u00a0them the list of classes on offer, rather than us MAKING UP OUR OWN.\u00a0 Some of the more intriguing options\u00a0were:\u00a0 Beef Breeding (this may be what they’re calling Livestock nowadays so as to set expectations right up front about the ‘butchering’ component), Dogs, Horseless Horse (this must be for Headless Horsemen…or\u00a0for city kids who like horses but don’t have any??\u00a0 It didn’t say anything about all the work being\u00a0done on\u00a0sawhorses…but I expect this might be the case – total yawn), Model Rocketry, Orienteering, Rabbit Breeding, Robotics, Veterinary Science.<\/p>\n

Sissy:\u00a0 “Ok, I want to do Dogs, Rabbit\u00a0Breeding and Veterinary stuff.”\u00a0 (Sense a theme here, anyone?\u00a0 This girl basically just wants to spend her entire day hugging and kissing furry animals.)<\/p>\n

Me: “Well…I’m not sure about the Rabbit Breeding thing,\u00a0Honey.\u00a0 If it requires us to build our own hutch in the back yard to\u00a0raise specialty rabbits and eventually sell their furs,\u00a0then we’re out.\u00a0 If we can just go VISIT someone ELSE’S hutch?\u00a0 Then we could consider it.”\u00a0 (As a side note, I do not know why I have to constantly beat Sissy’s choices down with a death stick.\u00a0\u00a0At least I\u00a0have NEVER mentioned that\u00a0part about euthanizing animals when she brings up her Veterinarian Dream.\u00a0 I’m not THAT mean even though I feel like I could win\u00a0a blue ribbon for\u00a0Hard-hearted Mothering\u00a0at the\u00a0County Fair EVERY YEAR!)<\/p>\n

Sonny: “If there’s nothing with monkeys, then I want to do Robots and Adventuring.”<\/p>\n

Me: “Adventuring is more like\u00a0Orienteering, I think, Buddy.\u00a0 Like\u00a0reading maps and using a compass to determine direction.\u00a0 Is that what you want?”<\/p>\n

Sonny: “No.\u00a0 Then just robots.\u00a0 Can you read some more about the robots?”<\/p>\n

Hubby – who has remained the mute driver this entire time and has seen me go under THREE TIMES now in the course of\u00a0this cockamamie conversation – finally pipes in with: “Sonny wants the class where you can drive by the 4-H office,\u00a0pick up a robot and bring it home.\u00a0 That’s actually the class that Sonny wants.”<\/p>\n

Sonny: “Yeah!\u00a0 That’s the class!\u00a0 That way you guys don’t have to do any more dishes!!”<\/p>\n

Yeah.\u00a0\u00a0Good plan about the dishes.\u00a0 So yes…let’s sign you up for robot\u00a0class.\u00a0 ‘Cause Heaven knows I could use some help with the dishes.\u00a0\u00a0Well, and the laundry.\u00a0 And really, the mothering in general – especially that part about enrolling in\u00a04-H classes!<\/p>\n

P.S.\u00a0 I’m awarding bonus points if you can tell me what the 4-H’s in 4-H stand for.\u00a0 Anyone?\u00a0 Anyone??\u00a0 And just as a fun fact, I’ll tell you that the 4-H\u00a0slogan is “Learn by Doing.”\u00a0 But if I were in charge, I’d change the slogan to “Learn by doing what I tell you to do, when I tell you\u00a0to do it.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
