{"id":1959,"date":"2013-10-03T13:51:51","date_gmt":"2013-10-03T19:51:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/newstayathomemom.com\/?p=1959"},"modified":"2013-10-03T13:51:51","modified_gmt":"2013-10-03T19:51:51","slug":"4-h","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newstayathomemom.com\/?p=1959","title":{"rendered":"4-H"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Because I&#8217;m a total dork, I signed up to receive newsflashes from my\u00a0town hall.\u00a0 (<em>Dork!<\/em>)\u00a0 One such newsflash came across today while the entire family was on the way home from parent\/teacher conferences.\u00a0 Serendipitously enough, it was about &#8220;Local Youth Invited to Join 4-H!&#8221;\u00a0 because really, what better time to be alerted about\u00a04-H enrollment than on the way home from parent\/teacher conferences with the entire family in the car!\u00a0 Am I right, or am I right??\u00a0 (<em>I&#8217;m right.\u00a0 I&#8217;m always right.\u00a0 It always goes down much easier if you get on board with me always being right.\u00a0 And no,\u00a0I&#8217;m not joking.\u00a0 In fact, it&#8217;s no joking matter.\u00a0 Being right all the time is a terrible, terrible burden and it&#8217;s not something to joke about.\u00a0 It&#8217;s serious business.<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p>After some general conversation about\u00a0where we may have encountered 4-H (the County Fair we attend every year\u00a0to see the 4-H exhibit and all the blue ribbon winning entries\u00a0&#8211; <em>Dork<\/em>!) we shifted into a discussion about what exactly 4-H is (home economics projects,\u00a0how to\u00a0raise\u00a0animals etc.).<\/p>\n<p>Sonny immediately chimed in with, &#8220;I&#8217;ll do anything with monkeys!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Me: &#8220;Uh&#8230;.No.\u00a0 There&#8217;s not even anything\u00a0ABOUT monkeys!\u00a0 4-H is\u00a0more about\u00a0baking cakes and how to raise livestock and stuff like that.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Sissy (the girl who wants to be a veterinarian): &#8220;Oooh.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll do livestock!\u00a0 Can I sign up for livestock?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Me: &#8220;Actually, Sweetie&#8230;I think &#8216;livestock&#8217;\u00a0is more along the lines of raising a calf all the way through butchering it and selling its meat.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Sissy: &#8220;THAT&#8217;S LIVESTOCK?!?!\u00a0 Then no, I don&#8217;t want to do THAT!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Since this conversation is going nowhere fast, I decided to READ\u00a0them the list of classes on offer, rather than us MAKING UP OUR OWN.\u00a0 Some of the more intriguing options\u00a0were:\u00a0 Beef Breeding (this may be what they&#8217;re calling Livestock nowadays so as to set expectations right up front about the &#8216;butchering&#8217; component), Dogs, Horseless Horse (this must be for Headless Horsemen&#8230;or\u00a0for city kids who like horses but don&#8217;t have any??\u00a0 It didn&#8217;t say anything about all the work being\u00a0done on\u00a0sawhorses&#8230;but I expect this might be the case &#8211; total yawn), Model Rocketry, Orienteering, Rabbit Breeding, Robotics, Veterinary Science.<\/p>\n<p>Sissy:\u00a0 &#8220;Ok, I want to do Dogs, Rabbit\u00a0Breeding and Veterinary stuff.&#8221;\u00a0 (Sense a theme here, anyone?\u00a0 This girl basically just wants to spend her entire day hugging and kissing furry animals.)<\/p>\n<p>Me: &#8220;Well&#8230;I&#8217;m not sure about the Rabbit Breeding thing,\u00a0Honey.\u00a0 If it requires us to build our own hutch in the back yard to\u00a0raise specialty rabbits and eventually sell their furs,\u00a0then we&#8217;re out.\u00a0 If we can just go VISIT someone ELSE&#8217;S hutch?\u00a0 Then we could consider it.&#8221;\u00a0 (As a side note, I do not know why I have to constantly beat Sissy&#8217;s choices down with a death stick.\u00a0\u00a0At least I\u00a0have NEVER mentioned that\u00a0part about euthanizing animals when she brings up her Veterinarian Dream.\u00a0 I&#8217;m not THAT mean even though I feel like I could win\u00a0a blue ribbon for\u00a0Hard-hearted Mothering\u00a0at the\u00a0County Fair EVERY YEAR!)<\/p>\n<p>Sonny: &#8220;If there&#8217;s nothing with monkeys, then I want to do Robots and Adventuring.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Me: &#8220;Adventuring is more like\u00a0Orienteering, I think, Buddy.\u00a0 Like\u00a0reading maps and using a compass to determine direction.\u00a0 Is that what you want?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Sonny: &#8220;No.\u00a0 Then just robots.\u00a0 Can you read some more about the robots?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Hubby &#8211; who has remained the mute driver this entire time and has seen me go under THREE TIMES now in the course of\u00a0this cockamamie conversation &#8211; finally pipes in with: &#8220;Sonny wants the class where you can drive by the 4-H office,\u00a0pick up a robot and bring it home.\u00a0 That&#8217;s actually the class that Sonny wants.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Sonny: &#8220;Yeah!\u00a0 That&#8217;s the class!\u00a0 That way you guys don&#8217;t have to do any more dishes!!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Yeah.\u00a0\u00a0Good plan about the dishes.\u00a0 So yes&#8230;let&#8217;s sign you up for robot\u00a0class.\u00a0 &#8216;Cause Heaven knows I could use some help with the dishes.\u00a0\u00a0Well, and the laundry.\u00a0 And really, the mothering in general &#8211;
