Remember that old riddle about a boy and his father who get into a car accident.\u00a0 The boy is rushed to the hospital in great need of an operation but the doctor who attends him says, “I can’t operate on this boy; He’s my son!”<\/p>\n

But how can that be?!?<\/p>\n

I posed this riddle to my kids last week, secure in the knowledge that we’ve come a long way baby.\u00a0 And surely THIS generation would be able to spot the clear answer!<\/p>\n

Sissy: Uh…blink blink, blink blink<\/em>….uh…Hey!\u00a0 I’ve got it!!\u00a0 It was the boy’s STEPFATHER, right??<\/p>\n

Me: No.<\/p>\n

Sonny:\u00a0 Uh….blink blink, blink blink<\/em>…uh…Hey!\u00a0 How about the boy was adopted and the real father was the doctor??!<\/p>\n

Me: No.<\/p>\n

Ok.\u00a0 Let’s pause right here.\u00a0 You know the answer to the riddle, right?\u00a0 I even hinted at it above (point, point).\u00a0\u00a0The doctor is the boy’s MOTHER!!!\u00a0 D’oh!<\/p>\n

Let’s pause further while I state that\u00a0I’m ALLLLLL about girl power (surprised much?).\u00a0 And I’ve taught my children to be allllll about girl power.\u00a0 And I’ve even told my husband that he’s all about girl power and he agrees he is.\u00a0 (He does everything I tell him to do except for take out the garbage.\u00a0 He makes me nag\u00a0him until he does THAT.\u00a0 Ahhhhh – the joys of girl power!).<\/p>\n

So why – oh, WHY –\u00a0in this day and age – did my children NOT\u00a0make the connection that the doctor was the boy’s MOTHER?!?\u00a0 Why were they so willing to come up with a dozen\u00a0cockamamie\u00a0answers about the FATHER?!?<\/p>\n

I have been puzzled by it ever since.\u00a0 Their pediatrician is a woman,\u00a0MY doctor is a woman, we have women FRIENDS\u00a0who are doctors, their AUNT\u00a0is a\u00a0doctor (no…not\u00a0THAT kind of doctor…but still…), my daughter even wants to BE a doctor (an animal one, but that counts).\u00a0 WHAT.\u00a0 IS.\u00a0 THE DISCONNECT???<\/p>\n

Plus??!\u00a0\u00a0All their lives I’ve been telling both my kids that they can grow up to be whatever they want to be.\u00a0 (Here’s where girl power morphs into\u00a0self-fulfillment power.\u00a0 Just go with it.)\u00a0\u00a0You don’t have to be limited by some gender-licious,\u00a0societal-norm\u00a0definition of what you can be.\u00a0 You wanna be a motorcycle guy who sings opera and has an iron claw?!?\u00a0 Go for it!\u00a0 You wanna be a mother AND a vet?\u00a0 Rock on!<\/p>\n

You wanna be an unemployed blogger with\u00a0an MBA?!?\u00a0 Boo-ya!\u00a0 ‘Cause, honey?!\u00a0 You are my\u00a0Shining Star!\u00a0 Don’t you go away!\u00a0 (No-ho-ho-ho, Baby!)\u00a0 Wanna be right here where you are.\u00a0 ‘Til\u00a0my dyin’ day*.<\/p>\n
