{"id":156,"date":"2012-10-02T08:25:34","date_gmt":"2012-10-02T14:25:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/newstayathomemom.com\/?p=156"},"modified":"2013-02-06T12:33:21","modified_gmt":"2013-02-06T19:33:21","slug":"tuesday-week-7","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newstayathomemom.com\/?p=156","title":{"rendered":"Book Fair"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I volunteered to work Book Fair yesterday at the kids&#8217; school.<\/p>\n<p>I won&#8217;t be volunteering again.\u00a0\u00a0And it wasn&#8217;t even a high-pressure day.<\/p>\n<p>What with all my free TIME and stuff&#8230;I figured I could donate a few hours to this little fundraiser.\u00a0 The day I worked was the day that the children simply &#8220;look&#8221; and &#8220;jot down&#8221; what they might like to buy.\u00a0 Then they tell their parents.\u00a0 At which point their parents have a fit over the cost of the books and only give them money to buy one\u00a0or two&#8230;the next day.\u00a0 So\u00a0today?\u00a0 Not\u00a0much buying.<\/p>\n<p>And it wasn&#8217;t the whole school or anything that showed up during my shift.\u00a0 It was only the kindergartners and their 4th grade buddies who were there to &#8220;help&#8221; the kindies &#8220;jot down&#8221; their wish list which really devolved into the 4th graders mostly making <em>their<\/em> wish lists and\u00a0<em>not<\/em> watching the kindies as they WALKED OUT with books!<\/p>\n<p>But there were a few intrepid souls who must have penciled the Book Fair\u00a0into their assignment pads and therefore actually brought money to spend during viewing day.<\/p>\n<p>I worked (food) retail in high school and could barely stand it when adults handed\u00a0me credit cards.\u00a0 Having a monkey in the guise of a kindergarten boy\u00a0hand me a ziploc bag of $41 IN COINS\u00a0for $40.49 worth of books puts me on edge.<\/p>\n<p>And then there was the little girl with the red headband who pony-skipped\u00a0in with a book (which\u00a0was clearly not bought but which &#8220;accidentally&#8221; made its way back with her to the kindergarten classroom where the teacher must have &#8220;strongly encouraged&#8221; her to <em>quickly<\/em> return it).\u00a0 She dropped it back on the table from wence it came\u00a0and then hightailed it outta there!\u00a0\u00a0All without making eye contact.\u00a0 Perhaps she thought she was invisible and we wouldn&#8217;t notice?<\/p>\n<p>Finally, there was another little girl who had a $20 bill in a flowered wallet who wanted to buy an invisible pen.\u00a0 Uh &#8211; this is a BOOK Fair, not an invisible pen fair.\u00a0 Are you sure your mother would want you to buy it?!<\/p>\n<p>Girl: &#8220;Ooooh yes.\u00a0 This is my birthday money and she said I could buy whatever I want.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Me: [in my head]\u00a0&#8220;Then do you wanna buy me a shot?!?&#8221; (heh heh heh &#8211; totally kidding.\u00a0 Kindof.\u00a0 Because don&#8217;t be silly.\u00a0 There wouldn&#8217;t be a bar at book fair&#8230;otherwise it would be called BAR fair.\u00a0 And the audience would be limited.)<\/p>\n<p>Ugh.\u00a0 But you see, right?!\u00a0 I can barely tolerate my own children and I birthed them.\u00a0 Other people&#8217;s children\u00a0being chaotic and handing me dirty money is not my idea of fun.<\/p>\n<p>So like I said, I won&#8217;t be going back.\u00a0 Been there, done that.\u00a0 Cross it off the list.\u00a0 I have better things to do with my TIME.\u00a0\u00a0 Like reading 50 Shades of Grey for example.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I volunteered to work Book Fair yesterday at the kids&#8217; school.
