Lately I’ve been considering applying for jobs I don’t even want and I may\u00a0not really even be qualified for – all just to have a job (hi, Unemployment Agency!).\u00a0\u00a0 And when I saw the phone line repair guy\u00a0up in the cherry picker yesterday talking on the phone<\/em><\/strong> – I sensed a kindred spirit.<\/p>\n

I mean, what could have been going on with that?\u00a0 I’m sure the phone call wasn’t of the “hey honey, I’m glad you called; what’s for dinner?”\u00a0variety.\u00a0 Instead, he was\u00a0totally focused on some sort of panel he had open at the top of the pole while being\u00a0deep in conversation.<\/p>\n

Maybe it was a quick\u00a0check in with his manager?\u00a0 He’s recently back from workers comp leave during which he\u00a0received therapy for his\u00a0fear\u00a0of heights and\u00a0phone-wire phobia and his manager just wanted to know how\u00a0his first day back on the job was going??\u00a0 In which case, it could\u00a0also have been H.R. or his union rep.<\/p>\n

Or perhaps they’re doing\u00a0some sort of\u00a0remote surgery up there in the air?\u00a0 Kindof like those surgeons working robots in an operating room thousands of miles away from where the patient actually is.\u00a0\u00a0Except in this instance, instead of robots, they use a cherry picker, a warm body\u00a0and a telephone to get the work done?\u00a0 Maybe the one guy\u00a0in the whole universe who’s qualified to repair\u00a0the wires is actually located in\u00a0Alaska and he has to “consult” with the guy who’s actually in Colorado repairing the wires??<\/p>\n

Voice on the line:\u00a0 “Ok.\u00a0 Do you see the red<\/em> wire?”<\/p>\n

Guy in the cherry picker:\u00a0 “Uh-huh uh-huh.\u00a0 I do!\u00a0 I do see the red wire.” [slowly reaches\u00a0for it]<\/p>\n

Voice on the line:\u00a0 “Well don’t touch it!”<\/p>\n

Maybe the\u00a0phone line repair dude was sick the day they covered “what to do with red wires” during the\u00a0phone line repair certification\u00a0class and he has his instructor on the phone doing a quick “refresher” course?<\/p>\n

Or…could it be that [GASP<\/em>!] he used to\u00a0be a very competent and talented marketing professional but\u00a0phone line repair dude was the only position he could get after his company took his marketing\u00a0job away and he had to make ends meet?\u00a0\u00a0Yikes!\u00a0 Will this be me shortly?!<\/p>\n

If so, I would be less scruffy looking.\u00a0 No beard for me (well at least not one that’s\u00a0visible from the ground anyway)\u00a0and I would be dressed way cuter.\u00a0 Hey!\u00a0 Ya gotta set the fashion trends when you’re perched above your adoring public!\u00a0 Hard hats, flannel shirts and jeans are totally in <\/em>again!!<\/p>\n
