I woke up early and made scones for the children.\u00a0 Blueberry and chocolate chip.\u00a0 It\u2019s what we stay at home moms do (shhh\u2026it was one of those purchases from WalMart I mentioned that I didn’t know I wanted or needed, but turns out I did and do; 13-18 minutes until lightly browned).<\/p>\n
And — I have a big announcement.\u00a0 Wait for it.\u00a0 Wait for it\u2026\u2026\u2026..\u2026.I have a carpool!\u00a0 Another first!!\u00a0 I\u2019m almost giddy with excitement.\u00a0 We now live in a neighborhood that includes another family whose kids attend the same (private, parochial) school as mine do.\u00a0 Have I jumped into the stay at home mom pool head first or what?\u00a0 My kids go to school and I don\u2019t have to take them there every morning.\u00a0 I can share that duty with someone else.\u00a0 Prior to this, there was no carpooling because of my work schedule and needing to be flexible to accommodate it.<\/p>\n
So, the carpool mom (who works!) picked the kids up at 7:15 am.\u00a0 How decadent!\u00a0 My husband is off to work.\u00a0 My kids are off to school and I didn’t have to take them there and then rush over to work with a million things-to-do running through my head. \u00a0There was no yelling or screaming about being late, being dressed, being fed, having lunches, having teeth brushed, having backpacks,\u00a0water bottles and homework.<\/p>\n
I find myself standing in the driveway waving good-bye as the carpool drives down the street.\u00a0 I\u2019m in my exercise clothes because I didn’t want the working mom to see me in my pj\u2019s and think less of me.\u00a0 But now what?\u00a0 Is it just my imagination or do I hear a roaring in my ears similar to the sound of the big ocean in the little seashell?!<\/p>\n
I\u2019m thinking I could go for a 10k run and be done and showered all by 9 a.m.\u00a0 Then I blink my eyes and it\u2019s 9:30 and I\u2019m having a second breakfast and still haven\u2019t gone running.\u00a0 What the frick??<\/p>\n
So I do finally go for a run (note \u2013 4 cups of coffee are too many to consume prior to a 6.2 mile run so you have to work them out of your system first).<\/p>\n
And I\u2019m showered and on my way by 11:30!\u00a0 Ok 2 \u00bd hours after I wanted to be showered and on my way, but who knows or cares.\u00a0 I actually “swing\u00a0by” the pediatrician\u2019s office to pick up medication paperwork\u00a0for school.\u00a0 Prior to this I would have thought picking up paper copies anywhere was an antiquated approach.\u00a0 But now\u2026I have TIME to do that sort of thing!!!<\/p>\n
I hang out with the school office ladies for a bit while I\u2019m making copies of said paperwork and we all compliment each other on our cute summer haircuts.\u00a0 Then I run a bunch of errands (the errands sit in the front passenger seat of the car multiplying like rabbits.\u00a0 I never knew I had so many or that they\u2019d keep coming.\u00a0 It seems like an endless supply.\u00a0 Which is ok because have I mentioned that I have TIME?!?).<\/p>\n
My cousin \u2013 whom I had actually told about my job take (I refuse to call it loss) \u2013 had mentioned in a recent conversation that I need to get started with my GTL efforts once the kids go back to school.\u00a0 It\u2019s what stay at home moms do.\u00a0 Gym. Tan. Lunch.\u00a0 In my cousin\u2019s fantasy version, the lunching takes place at the country club with alcoholic beverages being consumed.<\/p>\n
So, being\u00a0thoughtful and low-pressure, she texts me on Day 2 to ask how it’s going\u00a0as\u00a0one of the Real Housewives of Colorado (did I mention I live in Colorado?\u00a0 Now I’ve got my mom all panicked because I\u2019m revealing too much personal info.\u00a0 Just please don\u2019t ask for my social security #.\u00a0 Or stalk me.\u00a0 That\u2019s got \u201cI told you so\u201d written all over it.)<\/p>\n
Thus ensues the following text exchange\u2026<\/p>\n
ME: \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Let\u2019s see\u2026I went running outside this a.m. so that\u2019s the exercise & tanning in one fell swoop.\u00a0 And I had a bean burrito at Del Taco between errands so that covers all 3 things, right?\u00a0 Somehow it doesn’t seem as glamorous as u made it sound!!!<\/p>\n
COUSIN:\u00a0\u00a0 I think you\u2019re doing it wrong.\u00a0 And you missed the mojitos at the country club.<\/p>\n
ME: \u00a0\u00a0I should be wearing a bikini doing some of this, shouldn’t I??<\/p>\n
COUSIN:\u00a0 I think you added that.\u00a0 No need for additional pressure.<\/p>\n
ME:\u00a0 Good point. Just wish there were a pamphlet I could get from the OB\/GYN\u2019s office so I could read up on all of this!!<\/p>\n
COUSIN: Maybe your mom could send you a newspaper clipping.\u00a0 I know mine would.<\/p>\n
[my mother and my cousin’s mother\u00a0are sisters and therefore have a very similarly scary approach to rearing children who are now all in their 30\u2019s and 40\u2019s]<\/p>\n
ME:\u00a0 Yes, excellent call.\u00a0 I\u2019ll get her right on it.<\/p>\n
COUSIN:\u00a0 And she will feel good about being helpful.\u00a0 Win win.<\/p>\n
ME:\u00a0 And I might also get a recipe for 3 ingredient brownies-u-can-bake-in-a-mug as well as some articles on how I caused my children\u2019s peanut allergies.\u00a0 So I\u2019ll be fully informed on all topics.<\/p>\n
COUSIN:\u00a0 So there’s that.\u00a0 But then I can send you newspaper clippings on how to get over the lunacy of those that birthed you.<\/p>\n

Come to think of it, my mother and her sister were both stay at home moms.\u00a0 And I turned out all right.\u00a0 This will be fine.\u00a0 Totally fine.\u00a0 I\u00a0won’t mess my kids up or anything by being a stay at home mom.<\/p>\n
Also, I\u00a0now\u00a0fully anticipate receiving an envelope filled with clippings on all of the above as well as a few clippings on how people have turned their blogging into full time careers.\u00a0 No note will be included.\u00a0 Just a little smiley face on the back of the envelope.\u00a0 So I will know it\u2019s sent with love.\u00a0 And not sent by a robot in a newspaper clipping factory.<\/p>\n
